UKIP’s idea of freedom…..

Reading about Nigel Farage’s idea to ban HIV+ immigrants from the UK made me shake my head…. and as @auntysarah reminded me on Twitter, this is pure dog-whistle politics. As she put it:

I’m pretty sure she’s right – and it’s not the first time. Farage’s line to James O’Brien (see here), about his line that ‘you know what the difference is’ about Romanians moving in next door is just the same kind of thing. It’s about making people afraid of ‘the other’. All those people you ‘know’ you should be afraid of….

That in turn reminded me of a classic Tom Robinson Band song: Power in the Darkness, which parodies the kind of politics that UKIP represents, and that many of us hoped we’d seen off back in the 80s. The video is below, but here are the key lyrics.

And it’s about time we said ‘Enough is enough’
And saw a return to the traditional British values of discipline
Obedience, morality and freedom
What we want is

Freedom from the reds and the blacks and the criminals
Prostitutes, pansies and punks
Football hooligans, juvenile delinquents
Lesbians and left wing scum

Freedom from the niggers and the Pakis and the unions
Freedom from the gypsies and the Jews
Freedom from left wing layabouts and liberals
Freedom from the likes of you

I hoped we’d seen that kind of thing off in the 80s. We haven’t. It’s still there, and being dog-whistled at all the time. It really IS time we said enough is enough – but to this…

The rant is a little more than 3 minutes into this video. If you don’t know the song, you really should!

    1. Ed Miliband referenced the Battle of Cable Street in his 2014 Conference Speech:

I just hope he holds his nerve.

Gandhi said (I gather), “Peaceful protest only works if those you’re protesting against are capable of being shamed.” A lot of people in ukip have (and presumably in the BUF had) no sense of shame hence I guess you get Cable Streets.

I think, by and large, those of us opposed to ukip have some sense of shame. It is what makes us more likely to recognise complex problems often require complex solutions; that a consensus, even if only a temporary one to resolve one issue is often the way forward and that a compromise is, more often than not, better than a stand off.

ukip says we will slice through the Gordian Knot. Everyone else is either faffing around trying to untie it or has a vested interest in it not being untied.

Vote ukip, the Common Sense Party!

Common sense, that asset of which everyone feels that they have a surfeit and everyone else a dearth. When someone invokes common sense, I reach for my Browning …

  1. It is not so much a silent dog whistle they use as a panpipe of silent dog whistles.

ukip’s technique reminds me of that used by lawyers in programmes like Law and Order (the US version). Make an outrageous, even offensive comment during the cross examination of a witness, one designed to advance your case. Then happpily retract when either the judge or opposing council objects to it.

The judge cannot, of course, wipe the jury’s mind of those few minutes of retracted cross examination. He or she can only enjoin the jury not to take that part of the trial into consideration when deciding whether or not the accused is guilty, as charged.

If ukip were a prosecutor or defence lawyer in a US Court then, every few minutes, a cry of “Retraction, your Honour!” would be heard in the courtroom.

Why does Goebbels and his Big Lie spring to mind? And why am I reminded of, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” (Various!).

  2. You have to wonder about the level of intellect of those people who see all immigrants as being non white, and there own racist ideas. UKIP wants to control immigration, in line with just about every nation in the world. Presently the mainly red brown yellow or black people you think are being discriminated against are not allowed entry, meanwhile the mainly white members of the eussr are allowed free entry, why because outside the eussr you nee a visa within it you don’t so the people outside the mainly white eussr are discriminated by order of Brussells which the conlablibdumgreen party is in favour of. UKIP is actually not racist especially compared to those disgusting politicians and their supporters, vote UKIP for a fair and balanced immigration policy which means we can let in the people who deserve to be here no matter what their ethnicity, instead of the criminals and beggars we presently are being inundated with.

      1. Or as another ukiper put it, the Fourth Reich!

Good old Barry, you do know that Mr Farage worships Mr Putin, a former senior member of the KGB and spitting image of Uncle Joe?

You really cannot get more USSR than that!

    1. “You have to wonder about the level of intellect of those people who see all immigrants as being non white … Presently the mainly red brown yellow or black people you think are being discriminated against are not allowed entry”. Are you a bit confused there?

It may be news to you, Barry, but we were not the only country to have an Empire so plenty of non whites/mixed race citizens from France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Italy … may come here and do.

Also, our controlled migration policy external of the EU discriminates against the groups you describe and would do say under ukip, if only for the fact that ukip proposes to adopt Australia’s ‘liberal’ managed approach. Furthermore, those migrants coming into UK from outside of EU and from within are roghly equal in numbers.

And, for the record, migrants are those who come to UK on a temporary basis and immigrants are people who plan to stay.

ukip plans to withdraw from the ECHR, repeal the Equalities Act 2010 and any related legislation embedded within other Acts of Parliament. I do not have to cite the vile utterings of ukip’s many supporters, members and elected representatives to call ukip racist. Their legislative agenda provides plenty of evidence for that indictment.

And, “UKIP is actually not racist especially compared to those disgusting politicians and their supporters” should have stopped at “not racist” because the rest of the sentence either contradicts the first, ie ukip is racist/not racist or else the other parties are barely racist at all.

Barry, perhaps, you should think before you post and, by not doing so, confirm ukip’s own stereotype that its supporters are not the brightest knives in the drawer?
